Overview

Dermatological surgery and laser unit

We provide surgical treatment for skin cancer and certain laser treatments.

We're a leading centre in the UK for Mohs micrographic surgery to remove skin cancer.

Our team of doctors and specialist nurses perform more than 2,000 skin cancer surgeries each year.

We also offer other skin procedures, including:

  • biopsy
  • Botox
  • confocal microscopy (using a laser to look at skin cells and structures without the need for a biopsy)
  • cryotherapy (removing skin tissue by freezing it)
  • photodynamic therapy (combining cream and light therapy)

When funding is available, we offer laser treatments, including:

  • pulsed dye laser (PDL) for birthmarks (vascular lesions)
  • carbon dioxide laser (C02) for certain scars and skin lesions
  • neodymium YAG (Nd:YAG) laser for specific pigmented lesions

We were the first hospital in the UK to use reflectance confocal microscopy. This uses laser to view cells and skin structures without the need for a biopsy in certain cases.
