Bone marrow biopsy from a patient with myelofibrosisMyeloproliferative disorders (MPDs) are rare conditions and may present in a number of different ways, including being found by chance after a routine blood test.
They are characterised by high levels of any or all blood cell counts, and are associated with risk of haemostatic complications (blood clotting and bleeding).
In some patients, the bone marrow may fail and myelofibrosis or acute leukaemia may develop.
Our service
Normal bone marrow biopsy magnifiedWe offer regional specialist diagnosis, and conduct both international trials and local research. The team works with dermatology, paediatrics (locally and in Oxford) and the Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory as well as other centres of excellence worldwide. Many of our patients participate in trials.
The UK patient support group is run by both our team and patients.
Systemic mastocytosis is a rare myeloproliferative condition, and our centre is the only UK-based recognised centre for excellence in mast cell disorders in the European Network.
