Biography:

Alison has worked within oncology for the majority of her nursing career.  Initially this was a Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and since 1996 within the breast unit at Guy's and St Thomas'.
She was the ward manager on the Hedley Atkins Unit for five years, which at the time was a dedicated breast ward for surgical and medical patients. 
Alison continues to work within the Breast Unit as a breast care nurse and since 2011 has focused specifically on those with secondary disease.

Education and training: BSc – Health Studies, PgDip - Cancer Care.

Specialist interests: patients with metastatic disease, breast cancer.

Amanda Shewbridge

Amanda qualified as a nurse at Guy's Hospital in 1984. She specialised in oncology and more specifically breast cancer at Guy's for the majority of her career. She worked as a ward nurse and ward manager before progressing to clinical nurse specialist in breast cancer in 2000. She took on the role of head of nursing for cancer services at Bromley Hospitals NHS Trust in 2005 before returning to Guy's and St Thomas’ as the consultant Nurse for breast cancer. She is currently studying part time for a PhD at Southampton University.

Helen Froyd

Biography: Helen became an advanced nurse practitioner in breast care in 2011 at Guys's and St Thomas' Hospital. She worked at St Mary's NHS Trust for 13 years as a nurse practitioner and a breast care nurse. Helen has been working in oncology since 2001. 

Education and training: Registered General Nurse, Bsc Anthropology, Diploma in Cancer Care, Masters in Cancer Care.

Specialist interests: breast cancer, advanced nurse practice in oncology and breast care.

Joan Travers

Biography: Joan has extensive experience working with breast cancer patients and has a particular interest in the psychological support of patients during their treatment pathway.

Louise Hopkirk

Biography: Louise trained at The Nightingale Institute Kings College London and went into the field of oncology nursing from qualifying in 1998.

She worked as a sister in the Chemotherapy Day Unit prior to becoming a clinical nurse specialist in breast cancer in 2004.

Education and training: BSc – Cancer Nursing.

Specialist interests: younger women and breast cancer, genetics, breast reconstruction.

Vanessa Cross

Biography: Vanessa has worked within oncology since qualification in 1992. She specialised in the field of breast cancer from 2001, first as a research nurse at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and then as a breast care nurse at Charing Cross Hospital where she completed her masters. She joined the team as a breast care nurse at Guy’s & St.Thomas’ in 2014.

Education and training: MSc Cancer Care (dissertation in emotional aspects of survivorship).

Specialist interests: psycho-social aspects of breast cancer, reconstruction, decision making around breast cancer genetics.

 

Vernie Ramalingam

Biography: Vernie trained and worked as a midwife in South Africa for 10 years. She changed her career focus on coming to the UK. Vernie studied cancer nursing and worked at the Royal Marsden NHS Trust where she developed a passion for patient - focussed care. She joined Guy's and St Thomas' in 2006 as a lung research nurse and joined the breast surgery team in 2008. Vernie has played a main part in developing the research portfolio of the unit, managing a team of four clinical trial coordinators. The role as breast surgery clinical nurse specialist in University Hospital Lewisham offered an opportunity to be involved in the integrated patient care pathway and bridges academic and clinical activity in this area.
