Older persons assessment unit (OPAU)

Supporting patients to improve health and independence

Our older persons assessment unit (OPAU) sees people aged 60 and over, helping them with issues that may be affecting their independence and well being. We also accept patients under 60 where it's felt we can best address their needs.

Our team includes specialist doctors, nurses and therapists. The support you receive will depend on your individual needs, for example:

  • our consultant or specialist nurse may perform a full medical and nursing assessment
  • our staff may organise an iron infusion, blood transfusion, bone health treatment or a flu vaccination if required

  • our physiotherapist may provide advice and exercises, e.g. to improve your walking and movement
  • our occupational therapists assess how you're doing with day-to-day activities. They provide equipment and support to help you maintain your independence.
