Critical care referrals

Monitoring and treating patients with life-threatening conditions

Who can be referred

Patients can be referred to intensive care or our high dependency units from any hospital within the UK. Referrals are usually made to deal with local capacity issues or for the patient to receive advanced critical care therapies such as ECMO (extra corporeal membrane oxygenation).

Referrals from other hospitals must include a completed Inter-Provider Minimum Data Set or ensure that one is sent within 48 hours of referring a patient.

How to refer

  • Referrals from 8am-8pm: call the consultant in charge on 020 7188 2270 / 2271.
  • Referrals at other times: call the specialist registrar on call. To do this, call the bleep desk 020 7188 3206, ask for bleep 0610 and wait for a response.
  • Referrals for severe respiratory failure/ECMO: please fax your completed severe respiratory failure referral proforma (PDF 162Kb) to 020 7188 3048, and then phone Guy's and St Thomas’ critical care on 020 7188 2511 to confirm receipt of the referral.
