Critical care areas

Monitoring and treating patients with life-threatening conditions

Our critical care areas

At Guy’s hospital we have one Intensive Care Unit. At St Thomas’ we have 2 Intensive Care Units (ICU) and 3 High Dependency Units (HDU).

Patients no longer needing critical care treatment may be moved to either a High Dependency Unit or one of our wards. We have three high dependency units (HDUs) at St Thomas'. These are for patients who need less intensive care than on the critical care units, but more than can be provided on our general wards.

See the visiting our critical care units page.

High dependency units at St Thomas'

High Dependency Units are based on wards, but although they share the same telephone number they are managed separately from the wards. Below is a list of the HDUs at St Thomas'. The links will take you to the relevant ward areas where each HDU is located. All of these areas have restricted visiting hours to make sure that patients can rest and recover from their illness.
